Who Are the Haenyeo?

The Haenyeo (해녀, "sea women") of Jeju are legendary female divers who harvest seafood by hand, diving without oxygen tanks in the cold waters surrounding the island. Their tradition dates back centuries and is a symbol of Jeju's resilience, matriarchal culture, and harmony with nature. In 2016, Haenyeo culture was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

A Day in the Life

Haenyeo begin their day before dawn, gathering in coastal villages to prepare their gear—wetsuits, goggles, weighted belts, and nets. They dive for hours, holding their breath for up to two minutes at a time, collecting abalone, sea urchin, conch, and seaweed. Their unique whistling sound (sumbisori) is heard as they surface for air. The work is physically demanding and often dangerous, but Haenyeo take pride in their independence and deep connection to the sea.

Cultural Significance

Haenyeo are central to Jeju's identity. They have historically been the breadwinners of their families, forming tight-knit communities with their own rules and rituals. Their sustainable harvesting practices and respect for the ocean have preserved marine resources for generations. Today, Haenyeo are celebrated as living treasures and cultural ambassadors for Jeju Island.
